Looking good is essential to feeling good. Do you have gray-brown spots appearing on your face? In addition to being annoying or frustrating, these spots can really put a dent in your confidence. The spots appearing on your skin may be a result of melasma.
What is Melasma?
Melasma is a skin condition that causes brown spots or patches to appear on the face, particularly the cheeks, nose, chin, upper lip, or forehead. However, these brown patches can also appear on the elbows and forearms.
What Causes Melasma?
There are several possible causes of melasma.
- Pregnancy – Often called “the pregnancy mask”
- Hormones (i.e. birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy)
- Sun exposure
- Genetics
Most cases of melasma occur in women during their reproductive years. Although rare, men can have melasma.
