Skin Cancer Removal

At Aesthetic & Dermatology Center, your overall skin health is our main concern, and that includes discussing the stuff no one likes to talk about: skin cancer. Skin cancer refers to the abnormal, uncontrolled growth of skin cells. The most common skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. Skin cancers vary in many ways, such as sharp, color, size, and texture; therefore, early detection and action is vital to treating skin cancers.

Dr. Green is considered a surgical expert of skin cancer removal and teaches at George Washington University about best practices and techniques in skin surgery.

Basal Cell Carcinoma:

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer. Tumors may appear in many shapes and sizes, but are most often small, dome-shaped growths with a pearly color. BCC may also present as a sore that doesn’t heal or repeatedly heals and returns.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma:

While squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer, it is often cured with treatment when detected early. SCC often begins as rough bumps, red and rough patches, dome-shaped bumps that grow and bleed, or sores that don’t heal.

Melanoma:

While melanoma is the most dangerous, life-threatening form of skin cancer, treatment is often successful when it is discovered early. The first signs of melanoma can appear as existing moles or as new lesions. People with 100 or more moles or any atypical moles may be at greater risk for melanoma.

Skin Cancer Prevention:

Early detection is the key to treating skin cancers; however, prevention is the best treatment. To reduce your risk of skin cancer, consider making the following activities a part of your healthcare and self-care routines:

  • Protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen every day
  • Wear protective clothing
  • Avoid sun exposure from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM when the sun is at its strongest
  • Perform regular self-examinations of your skin to monitor for any questionable changes
  • See your dermatologist for checkups
